iPhone 5 gets detailed by analyst
Slightly-modified handset going into production in September
Looking forward to the new iPhone? Well, if the rumours out of Apple Insider are to be believed, it's unlikely to live up to your expectations.
Apple's iPhone 5 will apparently have only 'slight modifications' from its predecessor, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo from Concord Securities, who has made checks with supply chain sources and put together the pieces to give an overall picture of the new iPhone.
According to Mr Kuo, the iPhone 5 will include the faster A5 processor already found in the iPad 2, as well as a higher resolution eight-megapixel rear camera. There is also an improved antenna design, something that has been hinted at in the past.
Apparently, the new model will go into trial production in August and mass production in September, allowing Apple to reach shipment volumes of between 28 million and 32 million units this year. When will it hits the shelves? Probably October, perfect for that Christmas run-up.
So why buy one? Well, the main selling point is less about the hardware, more about the iOS 5 operating system, according to that same source, with the next iPhone (iPhone 6) likely to see the major shift in hardware. Kuo said he has heard that Apple plans a new design and greatly improved hardware specifications for the sixth-generation iPhone. It might even go on sale in the first half of 2012, due to 'fierce competition' with Google's Android mobile platform.
All speculation? Well, the man has a track record of getting both the iPad 2 details right, as well as the shipping date of the white iPhone 4. Based on that, you can take the above as somewhere near the truth.
